«Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, confirmed Rise of the Tomb Raider will be a timed exclusive for Xbox. It will launch holiday 2015 for Xbox 360 and Xbox One. After the exclusivity deal ends, publisher Square Enix is free to do what it will with the game and the Tomb Raider franchise. I’m guessing that means the rest of us will have to wait 3 to 6 months to play it. Not as bad as we all initially thought. Still, one has to wonder if this time-exclusivity deal isn’t sending the wrong message to a large part of the fanbase considering Tomb Raider has always been a multi-platform franchise.
Let’s talk about “it” right from the start. I was one of many Mass Effect fans that didn’t really enjoy the ending of the final chapter. It took me about a year to accept the game for what it is and reinvest myself back in the trilogy. But here’s the thing: there are many, many video games out there, but the Mass Effect series is the one I keep coming back to, over and over.
Casey Hudson is the main responsible for the creation of one of the most fascinating sci-fi universes ever imagined. He and his colleagues at BioWare have created a textured world populated by iconic and unforgettable characters that we’ve fallen in love with and keep celebrating here on Tumblr, year after year. That must mean something.
It’s with great sadness that I’ve seen the news today regarding Casey’s departure from BioWare. I find myself remembering his passion for the project, so well expressed in the memorable demo footage shown at E3 in 2006.
I also remember that, in my perception of things, that passion, that enthusiasm, is something that I haven’t seen in him since the launch of Mass Effect 3. One can only imagine how it all must have been hard to process on a personal level, no matter how exaggerated or valid some of that criticism might have been.
But the truth is that all that amazing universe of potential that lies in Mass Effect is there because this guy had a vision, and we all fell in love with it. So I say: thank you Casey Hudson. I hope you find that passion once again in your life, and new inspiration for amazing projects and ideas.
And I do hope that, sometime in the future, your path may once again cross the path of Mass Effect and maybe, who knows, of Commander Shepard, stepping once again into the Normandy for a new adventure!
